Description: Professor and Head, Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES) University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign WE TRANSFORM LIVES. Join our dynamic and internationally recognized food science and human nutrition department which includes 36 tenure-track and specialized faculty members involved in teaching, research, and Extension, with expertise in food science, human nutrition, dietetics, and hospitality management. The department offers curricula for approximately 400 undergraduates, 80 graduate students pursuing M.S. and Ph.D. degrees on campus, and 60 students pursuing an off-campus M.S. degree in food science. Major Responsibilities: The Professor and Head of the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition (FSHN) is a full-time administrative position in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This position is responsible for the administration of the research, teaching, outreach and international activities of the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition. Specifically, the Head's responsibilities are: Provide leadership and vision to the department, advancing the goals of the land-grant mission in research, teaching, outreach and international activities and promoting equality and diversity Develop and communicate departmental policy guidelines in consultation with the faculty Support the department's educational mission and promote student professional development Supervise and evaluate faculty and staff in the department Develop and implement a strong mentoring program for faculty and staff Administer budgetary and financial matters within the department Provide leadership with college support for development and fundraising Represent the department at the college and campus levels Facilitate collaboration with the stakeholders of the FSHN department including leaders in industry, government, other universities, public groups, and professional societies Required Qualifications: All candidates must hold a Ph.D. in food science, nutrition, or another discipline complementary with department programs with a strong background in research and either resident instruction or extension education, and evidence of excellent administrative ability required. Candidates must be qualified for a tenured appointment at the rank of full professor. The position requires demonstrated leadership, administration, and management skills as well as an ability to work with people and communicate ideas effectively. Candidates must also demonstrate a strong commitment to the mission of a land-grant university and international activities. Experience with public and private funding sources is necessary. The Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition is dedicated to implementing research, education, and outreach programs designed to promote a safe, nutritious, accessible, and affordable food supply that enhances human health. To this end, students and faculty work collectively toward learning, discovering, and disseminating new knowledge and in applying novel technologies to achieve the departmental mission. The basic human need for high-quality food for optimal health and wellness drives the core of student training within the FSHN department, as we strive to be a global leader at transforming lives through distinguished scholarship. The department has strong ties to the food industry and our highly-acclaimed faculty garner a broad portfolio of funding from federal agencies, foundations, and the food and pharmaceutical industry. The FSHN research, education, and outreach programs are central to newly developed programs and initiatives at Illinois, including a new undergraduate major (Metropolitan Food and Environmental Systems) focusing on innovative, sustainable food production and environmental safety within urban settings, a cross-college Food Security faculty hiring initiative, a cross-campus Microbiome Initiative, and the proposed Food Innovation Center as part of the Discovery Partners Institute near Chicago. The department houses many unique and updated facilities, including recent major renovations to the pilot processing plant, metabolic kitchen, and shared laboratory spaces.
