The staff Registered Nurse (RN) is a professional caregiver. The RN
assumes responsibility for a group of patients for a designated
time frame. The RN provides care to these patients via the
utilization of the nursing process. The RN maintains an
understanding of nursing trends, technology, and resources. The RN
performs all responsibilities and duties required by the unit. The
RN implements procedures and theories related to the specific area
of practice. The RN maintains up-to-date and accurate documentation
of nursing care. The RN completes initial assessments upon patient
admission. The RN develops appropriate plans of care according to
unit standards. The RN implements nursing interventions and patient
care procedures. The RN modifies plans of care based upon
continuous evaluation. The RN takes responsibility for patient and
employee safety. The RN reports and/or corrects safety hazards and
incidents. The RN communicates with others directly and privately
when needed. The RN offers constructive feedback for the
professional development of peers. The RN confers with colleagues
to expand their knowledge base. The RN identifies their own
learning needs and seeks appropriate solutions. The RN fulfills all
requirements of departmental competencies. The RN completes patient
assessments and documents data accurately. The RN recognizes normal
and abnormal findings and notifies the physician. The RN
establishes plans of care for patients and sets goals. The RN
establishes IVs on patients over eight years old. The RN practices
the five rights for medication administration for all patients. The
RN participates in the time-out process with the operating room RN.
