PRIMARY POSITION FUNCTION/SUMMARY: Cybersecurity Engineer & Software Developer is a software developer with cybersecurity subject matter expertise who provides proactive consultation regarding cybersecurity best practices and controls in the development of web, mobile, and general applications. The position will also focus on application development frameworks, development process standardization, software development lifecycle (SDLC), advising on cybersecurity processes, controls, capabilities, and compliance. The incumbent works with stakeholders throughout the University of Illinois System to implement cybersecurity best practices and controls. Senior Cybersecurity Engineer & Software Developer: The Senior Cybersecurity Engineer & Software Developer leads and delivers on security projects in their assigned domain(s) and provides guidance to other staff. Lead Cybersecurity Engineer & Software Developer: The Lead Cybersecurity Engineer & Software Developer leads large, team-based projects delivering on organization-wide objectives, providing guidance and mentorship to other staff. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - Cybersecurity Engineer & Software Developer: Implement and manage security-focused code and applications Design, develop, test, and implement expert technical solutions which advance both Privacy and Security's and larger-scoped strategic initiatives. Planning and conducting reviews to monitor and evaluate application conformance with organizational security policies, standards and guidelines. Guiding internal security professionals, students, and partners in their development practices and the deployment of security applications. Consult with customers and internal staff to develop and implement cybersecurity application development process, controls, solutions, capabilities, and compliance. Develop recommendations for projects based on compliance standards and input from project team(s). Collaborate with other security staff on an as-needed basis in advanced security incident investigations. Act as operational cybersecurity point-of-contact for assigned domain(s). Work with individuals across the University of Illinois System to review existing practices and implement standards and industry best practices for IT application security. Contribute to Risk Assessment and Security Evaluations Provide guidance/support in evaluating vendors, open source products, and internally developed code. Communicate how security standards, frameworks, and compliance documentation measure compliance of systems and applications/code. Guide internal security professionals, students, and partners in their development practices and the deployment of security applications. Assign and prioritize work among staff working on the project(s) led by the incumbent, in consultation with management. Consult with customers and internal staff to develop and implement cybersecurity application development process, controls, solutions, capabilities, and compliance Implement assigned projects independently in consultation with appropriate stakeholders. Develop recommendations for projects based on compliance standards and input from project team(s). Collaborate with other security staff on an as-needed basis in advanced security incident investigations. Act as operational cybersecurity point-of-contact for assigned domain(s). Work with individuals across the University of Illinois System to review existing practices and implement standards and industry best practices for IT application security. Develop training and other educational material in conjunction with support & training staff. Support senior vulnerability assessment staff perform vulnerability, risk analysis, and risk process facilitation of existing and planned systems DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Common to all levels Represent the IT Security office in collaborative and strategic initiatives, applying expertise and functioning as an integral, complementary part of the cybersecurity team Participate in and facilitate internal and external meetings. Drive discussions as needed to represent the needs of the assigned domain(s). Present findings/reports to technical and non-technical audiences. Provide excellent customer service on behalf of the IT Security office. Advocate for Technology Services or other clients and partners in service planning and deployment across the organization. Provide recommendations for continual process improvement across all Security workflows. Draft and review documentation such as analyses of technical, administrative, or procedural security issues; procedural documentation/playbooks; and team documentation. Develop and maintain personal and professional excellence through university-provided and external training/seminars/courses; staying abreast of industry trends, methods, and published literature; and participating in manager-approved innovation programs and individual development initiatives. QUALIFICATIONS: Required: Cybersecurity Engineer & Software Developer One year experience with direct web, API, or mobile application development. Either one year of progressively more responsible work experience in an IT profession with information security duties and responsibilities, or 60 semester hours of college course work or an Associate's degree in information technology or closely related field Required: Senior Cybersecurity Engineer & Software Developer Three years experience with direct web, API, or mobile application development. Required: Lead Cybersecurity Engineer & Software Developer Five years experience with direct web, API, or mobile application development. Demonstrated experience leading software development projects Preferred: All levels Bachelor's degree in a related field Experience in an academic/higher education campus IT environment Team leadership experience Experience performing operational cybersecurity duties in a professional environment Experience with code review or application vulnerability assessment Experience with network engineering Experience with public cloud providers (AWS/Azure/Google) or containerized applications Experience implementing cybersecurity projects Customer engagement / customer service experience SANS, GSEC, CISSP, CEH, MCA, CCSA, CISA or similar cybersecurity certifications highly desired Successful Candidates will also have: Demonstrated expertise in software development and application security. Demonstrated knowledge and skills in at least one of the following languages: PHP, Perl, Java, Python, C, C++, C#, .NET, ASP. Demonstrated knowledge and skills in software development methodologies (e.g. waterfall, scrum/agile). Knowledge of code review and application vulnerability testing. Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following domains: Secure IT Operations, Data Security, Incident Response, Security Engineering, Network Security, Systems Security, or Vulnerability Management. Excellent attention to detail. Helpful problem solving ability. Demonstrated ability in effective communication and collaborating in a high performance team environment, including oral, written, and active listening. Demonstrated commitment to customer service and customer satisfaction principles. Ability to collaborate positively and effectively with diverse workgroups.
