Description: ACADEMIC LEARNING SKILLS SPECIALIST DIVISION OF GENERAL STUDIES University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is now accepting applications for the position of Academic Learning Skills Specialist in the Division of General Studies (DGS). The primary responsibility of this position is to support the academic and personal success of students in the Division of General Studies (DGS) with a focus on providing learning skills education for students from underserved and first-generation backgrounds, including students in the DGS Enrichment Experience Program (EEP), and students on academic probation. In addition, this position provides training on learning skills support for DGS advisors and administrators. DGS is the academic home for approximately 3,000 first and second-year students who are undeclared or pre-engineering at the University of Illinois. Close to 200 students are admitted each year into the DGS Enrichment Experience Program, which is designed to provide undeclared students from underrepresented backgrounds who show academic potential with focused academic advising, transition, mentoring, and referral services. Approximately 33% of students in DGS are from historically underrepresented backgrounds. DGS employs a developmental advising approach to support students as they explore their own personal and professional interests and the curricular and co-curricular opportunities available at the University of Illinois. This is a full-time, 12-month, benefits-eligible Academic Professional position reporting to the DGS Assistant Director for Academic Enrichment Programs. Successful candidates will be selected to provide support, referral, academic advising, and program development for underserved and first generation students and will join a staff of close to 20 student academic affairs professionals. Academic Professionals at UIUC are responsible for a minimum of 40 hours per week generally 8 am to 5 pm. Salary is commensurate with experience. RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide time management and learning skills support and developmental academic advising services for undergraduate students enrolled in the Division of General Studies with a focus on students from underserved and first-generation backgrounds, including students in the DGS Enrichment Experience Program (EEP), and students on academic probation. Engage in purposeful discussion with students to learn about course performance and interests, teach strategies for time management and study skills, assess qualifications for entry into specific courses or majors, and gauge student adjustment to the University. Meet individually with students from underserved and first-generation backgrounds, including students in the DGS Enrichment Experience Program (EEP) to teach strategies for academic success. Assist students in understanding the structure and requirements of campus degree and pre-professional programs. Apply judicious interpretations of Illinois program requirements on the basis of individual circumstances and within the framework of policy guidelines established by the campus. Provide advice and counsel regarding viable alternatives in academic, personal, and career options. Participate in the 6-8 week New Student Registration program in June and July for the advisement and registration of new DGS freshmen and transfer students entering the University of Illinois. Provide support for students during Express Advising (drop-in advising) at designated times throughout the academic year. Provide support and resources for students on academic probation. Create a welcoming environment that is inclusive of students from diverse backgrounds. Respond to queries from students, faculty, staff, and parents/families as appropriate (within the parameters of FERPA). Provide referrals for campus and academic resources for additional support. Responsible for thorough record-keeping of all student contacts. Conduct academic and study skills sessions for students on academic probation as part of the Program for Academic Support and Success (PASS) to assist them with developing a learning strategy to return to good academic standing. Teach one or more sections of General Studies (GS) 101, a First-Year experience course coordinated by DGS, in the fall semester with potential for additional teaching experience in the spring semester. Train advisors on time management and learning skills techniques and strategies to best serve the diversity of students in DGS. Assist with building partnerships across campus to promote curricular and co-curricular opportunities for DGS students, serve on appropriate college and campus committees as assigned, and represent DGS to campus and external constituencies. Meet regularly with partners from the Office of Minority Student Affairs (OMSA). Participate in activities that facilitate the mission and goals of the Division of General Studies such as involvement with DGS committees, workgroups, staff development, and on-going training. Other relevant duties as assigned; minimal evening and weekend work required. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Master's degree in higher education, student affairs, college student personnel, counseling, education, or closely related field; One year of full-time professional experience or two years of related graduate-level experience working with college students in academic advising, counseling, career development, student affairs, or teaching; Experience working with diverse student populations and commitment to fostering an inclusive, welcoming environment for students and staff. Outstanding presentation and/or teaching experience; Experience working effectively both independently and in collaborative groups; Understanding of learning skills development in college students that support student academic success; Ability to collaborate and work with students, staff, faculty, and parents from a variety of diverse backgrounds; Exceptional interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills; Exceptional time management skills and ability to manage multiple priorities; Evidence of exceptional ability to focus on details and specific information; Demonstrated ability to respond to concerns, motivations, and learning patterns of undergraduate students. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Three years of full-time professional experience working with college students in academic advising, learning skills, counseling, or student affairs; Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations and ability to articulate the value of diversity and inclusivity; Experience understanding of the needs, concerns, and strengths of undeclared and exploring students at the college level; Involvement in professional organizations such as the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA).
