Help Duties The Surgical Technician is located at the VA Illiana Health Care System (VAIHCS) in Danville IL and is a member of the surgical team that provides assistance to the surgeon and other team members during surgical procedures. The Surgical Technician participates with the surgical team members in planning and implementing complex procedures under the general supervision of the surgical team. Duties Include: Sets up sterile field with all required items for each procedure such as air-powered equipment, fiber optic equipment, laparoscopic equipment, microscopes, arthroscopy equipment, urologic equipment, recording devices, and other operating room supplies and equipment. Handles instruments, supplies, and equipment during all surgical procedures such as General Surgery, Urology, Podiatry, Ophthalmology, Endoscopy. Plans and discusses each procedure with surgical professionals and assures that all supplies and equipment are available prior to the surgical procedure. Functions as a primary scrub person for handling instruments, supplies and equipment during all surgical procedures. Prepares, organizes, and maintains sterile surgical set-ups including sterile fields, with all required items for each procedure. Observes and responds promptly to each stage of the surgical procedure and anticipates the needs of the surgeon, by maintaining a high level of concentration for extended periods of time. Assists the surgeon by performing such procedures as preparing skin grafts, suctioning, holding retractors, applying skin staples, and cutting sutures. Prepares prosthesis and surgical devices during procedures. Assists in training residents, medical students, nursing students, operating room technology students, and new Operating Room (OR) staff in the operation of equipment, sterile technique, handling of instruments, and OR procedures to include the scrub role in surgical procedures. Assists in the implementation and utilization of the Generic Inventory Package to maintain adequate surgical supplies. This includes but not limited to re-stocking the OR cabinets, specialty carts, and other secondary storage containers. Processes instruments and supplies after surgery. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 7:00am-3:30pm Position Description Title/PD#: Surgical Technician- Physical Requirements: Duties regularly require providing manual assistance in lifting and positioning patients, most of who are at stages of unconsciousness. There are extensive periods of regular and recurring standing, walking, bending, lining, pushing, reaching, and prolonged stretching to provide easy accessibility of instruments and supplies for the surgeon. incumbent must be dexterous in passing instruments to surgeons without compromising principles of aseptic technique and in a manner requiring little or no effort from the surgeon.Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level. GS-4 Level Experience: Must have six (6) months of general experience and six (6) months of specialized experience. General experience is (1) any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Specialized experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. Specialized experience typically includes, but is not limited to: basic knowledge of the instruments and procedures commonly used in the Operating Room (OR), to include basic knowledge of all tools and items and their purpose within the OR; the ability to position patients for treatment and/or surgery and basic knowledge of usual alternate positions for patients with common physical disabilities; knowledge of basic medical terminology to interpret physician/surgeon instructions; basic understanding of anatomy and physiology; knowledge and skill in emergency first aid procedures such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation; skill to apply such knowledges to perform routine diagnostic or treatment procedures or to assist a team member during procedures; basic knowledge of normal and abnormal results to recognize and report obvious abnormalities during procedures; and knowledge of sterilization methods to clean instruments to prevent the spread of infectious and contagious diseases. OR Education: Must have successfully completed at least 2 years of education above high school with at least 12 semester hours in subjects directly related to the work of the position such as anatomy and physiology, surgical technology, aseptic techniques etc. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED OR Combination of Education and Experience: Must have equivalent combinations of successfully completed education and specialized experience directly related to the work of the Surgical Technician position, which may be substituted to meet the experience requirements of the position. TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED GS-5 Level Experience: Must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least next lower grade level (GS-4). Specialized experience scrubbing in at least one of the following areas: General Surgery, Urology, Podiatry, Ophthalmology, Endoscopy. Specialized experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. Specialized experience typically includes, but is not limited to: basic knowledge of the instruments and procedures commonly used in the Operating Room (OR), to include basic knowledge of all tools and items and their purpose within the OR; the ability to position patients for treatment and/or surgery and basic knowledge of usual alternate positions for patients with common physical disabilities; knowledge of basic medical terminology to interpret physician/surgeon instructions; basic understanding of anatomy and physiology; knowledge and skill in emergency first aid procedures such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation; skill to apply such knowledges to perform routine diagnostic or treatment procedures or to assist a team member during procedures; basic knowledge of normal and abnormal results to recognize and report obvious abnormalities during procedures; and knowledge of sterilization methods to clean instruments to prevent the spread of infectious and contagious diseases. OR Education: Must have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position such as anatomy and physiology, surgical technology, aseptic techniques etc. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED OR Combination of Education and Experience: Must have equivalent combinations of successfully completed education and specialized experience directly related to the work of the Surgical Technician position, which may be substituted to meet the experience requirements of the position. TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED GS-6 Level Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level); that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience scrubbing in at least one of the following areas: General Surgery, Urology, Podiatry, Ophthalmology, Endoscopy. Specialized experience includes: Working with the instruments and procedures commonly used in the Operating Room (OR), positioning patients for treatment and/or surgery; interpreting physician/surgeon instructions; skill in emergency first aid procedures such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation; performing routine diagnostic or treatment procedures or to assist a team member during procedures; working with normal and abnormal results to recognize and report obvious abnormalities during procedures; working with sterilization methods to clean instruments to prevent the spread of infectious and contagious diseases. OR Graduate Education: One-half year of graduate education (9 semester hours or equivalent) of successfully completed graduate level education that is directly related to the work of the position to be filled (Surgical Technician). This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED) OR Combination of both experience and graduate education: Possess combination of both education and experience. Equivalent combination of successfully completed graduate education and experience to qualify at the GS-6 level.
